The School of Architecture and Urban Planning in HUST was set up in May 2000, combined of the original School of Architecture in Huazhong University of Technology and the Architectural Planning Department in Wuhan College of Urban Planning. There are Architecture Department, Urban Planning Department, Arts Designing Department, Academe of Architectural Design, and Academe of Urban Planning and Design. Architecture Department is made up of the original Architecture Department in Huazhong University of Technology and the Architectural Major in Wuhan College of Urban Planning.
Huazhong University of Technology (the original Huazhong College of Technology) was set up in 1982, and first took in undergraduate students and graduate students in September. Professor Zhou Puyi from Qinhua University was hired to be the 1st dean of the department. Famous architects like Mr. Huang Kangyu, Mr. Cai Dezhuang, Mr. Zhang Langbu and Professor Huang Heling, Huang Langu were hired as leaders of the department and the staff room. At the very beginning, we were supported by other Architecture Departments from other universities in and out China, so that we gained a thick base and some experiences at first.
In 1986, State Department Degree Committee authorized Huazhong University of Technology formally to set up a Base of Architectural Design and theoretics for secondary subject master. In 1992, the undergraduate program changed to 5 years, according to National Education committee¡¯s decision. In 1997, we passed the evaluation of imparting master¡¯s degree. In May 1999, Architecture Department in Huazhong University of Technology passed evaluation on Architecture teaching and design and evaluation on graduation program.
The original Wuhan College of Urban Planning was the first School for urban planning in China, authorized by State Department. It was directly under national Ministry of Construction. Its history dates from Dec. 3rd in 1952, when School of Architecture Engineering was founded. Then went through steps of Wuhan College of Urban Planning, Wuhan College of Architecture Engineering, Wuhan College of Architecture Materials and Industry, and so on.
In Feb. 1985, found Urban Planning Department, including Urban Planning and Gardening. In 1986, it began to teach Architecture. In 1993, Wuhan College of Urban Planning rearranged its departments. There were Urban Planning Department and Architecture Department, teaching architecture and urban planning.
In May 2000, the original School of Architecture in Huazhong University of Technology and Architecture Department in Wuhan College of Urban Planning united, forming School of Architecture and Urban Planning in HUST, Mr. Yuan Peihaung, master of Architecture Designing, as dean.
Recent years, Architecture Department has finished its construction on subjects by rearranging organizations, teachers, plans, and conditions. There are Major Architecture and Master Base of Architecture Design and Theoretics. Up to now, there are 18 years of undergraduate and graduate students graduate.
There is a special teaching building of Architecture Department, 7100©O. There are 60 teachers with 7 professors and 18 adjunct professors, 25 instructors. The teachers took part in researches, designing work while teaching, and gain a lot of prizes. There are 669 undergraduate students and 150 graduate students in plan. 120 graduate students are in classed for further study. Many are backbones of the company after graduation and won praises from them.
