The School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SAUP) of HUST , a merger of the former School of Architecture of Huazhong University of Technology and the Architectural Planning Department of the former Wuhan Urban Construction Institute ,was established in May 2000.
There are Architecture Department, Urban Planning Department, Arts Designing Department, Academe of Architectural Design, and Academe of Urban Planning and Design in our school. Architecture Department is made up of the original Architecture Department in Huazhong University of Technology and the Architectural specialty of Wuhan Urban Construction Institute.
The Architecture department of Huazhong University of Technology(now the HUST) was set up in 1982, and took in the first year of undergraduate and graduate students in September of the same year. Professor Zhou Puyi from Tsinghua University was the 1st dean of the department. And some famous architects like Professor Huang Kangyu, Professor Cai Dezhuang, Professor Zhang Langbu and Professor Huang Heling, Huang Langu were also engaged in the establishment of the department. At the very beginning, many scholars and architecture departments and schools from other universities gave us so much help that we gained solid fundamental and abundant experiences at the starting point.
In 1986, Degree Committee of State Department formally authorized Huazhong University of Technology to set up a master's degree program: Architecture Design and Theory. In 1992, the undergraduate program of architecture changed into 5-year period under the approval of the National Education committee. In 1997, we passed the state assessment for imparting masterĄ¯s degree. In May 1999, Architecture Department in Huazhong University of Technology passed the state educational evaluation on Architecture teaching and design and the evaluation on postgraduate program. The former Wuhan Urban Construction Institute was the first School for urban planning in China established under the approval of the State Department. It was one of the colleges that were directly under the national Ministry of Construction. Its history dates back from Dec. 3rd in 1952, when the School of Architectural Engineering was founded. Then it went through several steps from Wuhan College of Urban Planning, to Wuhan College of Architectural Engineering, and then Wuhan College of Architectural Materials and Industry.
In Feb. 1985,the Wuhan Urban Construction Institute founded the Urban Planning Department, which included two specialties: Urban Planning and Gardening. In 1986, it started the specialty of Architecture. In 1993, the institute made a regulation of its departments which led to the establishment of the Urban Planning Department and Architecture Department.
In May 2000, the original School of Architecture in Huazhong University of Technology and Architecture Department in Wuhan Urban Construction Institute merged, forming School of Architecture and Urban Planning. Professor Yuan Peihuang, a famous architect in china held the post of president of the school and Professor Li Baofeng was the vice president.
In recent years, the school has witness tremendous development through the organizational structure adjustment, the faculty reallocation and the amendment of the fostering project. And finally we accomplished the recombination of the specialties and related subject construction.
There is an exclusive teaching building for the school, which covers an area of 11000ŠO.
